You Love Them, but Do You Really Know Them?
Nutrition Is Key to Health!
Through the various stages of life your pet’s nutritional requirement undergoes a magnitude of changes. As puppies or kittens, the nutrient requirement is particularly high especially in terms of energy, protein, minerals and vitamins, to support the rapid and intense growth this period calls for. A diet for young pets also needs to thoughtfully cater to a delicate digestive system and an immature immune system.
With adults, it’s all about maintaining an optimal body weight and composition. A food formula with a high protein, low carbohydrate content, works well to maintain an ideal body weight.
Senior animals, on the other hand, may lose their appetite, their sense of smell and be less active. There is also a tendency for them to lose muscle mass. It is interesting for them to adopt a food rich in proteins and one that is extremely easy to digest.
While age and life stage are defining factors when adopting a diet for your beloved pets, it is also noteworthy to consider their activity levels, health status and whether they are neutered or not! 30 to 40% of our pets are overweight. Poor eating habits, sedentary lifestyle, sterilisation…all pose a risk factor for obesity and subsequent health conditions such as Osteoarthritis, Diabetes, etc. Sterilisation of dogs and cats comes with an abundance of benefits, but on the flipside- it increases their appetite and reduces their energy requirements by 20%, leaving them predisposed to weight gain.
A food that is high in proteins and low in carbohydrates, helps to limit weight gain, while yet maintaining their muscle mass.
Some Practical Tips
1. Food Transition: It is essential to gradually introduce the new diet in combination with the old diet over a period of 7 days going up to even 3 weeks, particularly for large breeds and/or sensitive breeds.
2. Protein Intake: Protein intake encourages your pet’s water intake. Hence always ensure fresh and clean drinking water is available at multiple points around your home.
3. Daily Food Ration: Always weigh out at the start of the day, your pet’s daily food ration as per your dog or cat’s lifestyle, age, activity levels, etc. This prevents over-eating, especially when the food is really yummy!
