Summer comes with many memories, sunshine, curled up moments, and most of all Sparkle my beautiful Springer Spaniel. Summer, winter, rain or spring- Sparkle used to always Sparkle. His eyes would light up like amber ray of hope from the sun and only target being how to make the most of each day! With Sparkle we enjoyed every moment and till today those beautiful brown eyes- I can never forget. A dog so regal, attitude- yes! But love endless. The warm nudge on my hand or the tantrums would forever brighten my soul. With Sparkle I did understand the meaning of love. He taught us so many things every second of every day. And I still think every day- I love you more. Summer breaks got us many vacations with Sparkle- which truly sparkled each of our lives. In all of this we took good care to protect our furry baby with all our love.
Dogs experience summer very differently from us. Without the luxury of perspiration, they rely almost entirely on panting to regulate their body temperature—a system that can quickly become overwhelmed. Heat exhaustion is subtle, creeping in through heavy breaths, lethargy, and quiet discomfort. Awareness, therefore, becomes our most powerful tool.
Hydration is important and essential. Fresh water must be constantly accessible, replenished often, and, where possible, cooled slightly to encourage drinking. Thoughtful additions such as chilled, dog-safe treats or water-rich foods can make a meaningful difference, especially for energetic pups who tend to play past their limits.
Equally important is the rhythm of the day. Walks should follow the gentler hours—early mornings and late evenings—when the ground has cooled and the air is kinder. A simple pause to touch the pavement can prevent painful burns, reminding us that what seems manageable to us may be harsh for them.
A dog’s coat is not merely aesthetic; it is protective. Regular brushing to remove loose fur allows the coat to perform its natural function—insulating against heat while shielding delicate skin from sun exposure.
Summer also brings with it an invisible surge in parasites. Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes thrive in warmth, making preventive care and routine checks an integral part of seasonal responsibility. It is the kind of vigilance that often goes unnoticed—until it is neglected.
And then there is the simplest rule, yet the one most often forgotten: never leave a dog in a parked car. Not for a minute, not in the shade, not with the windows cracked. The consequences escalate far too quickly, turning oversight into tragedy.
Yet, summer is not without its joys. It is in the splash of water, the quiet companionship of shaded corners, the shared stillness of a setting sun. With a little attentiveness, the season transforms—from something to be managed into something to be savoured.
Caring for a dog is not just about meeting needs. It is about understanding unspoken limits, anticipating discomfort, and offering comfort before it is asked for. And in summer, that understanding becomes an act of love. Do enjoy the summer sun with your lovely furries and write-in.
